Using Pointecarré textile software I learnt how to take a photograph and translate it into a weaving file that could be read by the jacquard loom - and then woven.

The difference between a traditional loom & and jacquard loom

Traditional loom: Patterns are limited my the number of shafts (harnesses) it has.  It is the shaft that holds your threads.  If you have 4 shafts, you only have 4 threading variables.
Jacquard loom:  You can control every single thread, giving you infinite possibility.
